Program Requirements for Chinese Language Credit


I. School Introduction

Chicago Northwest Suburban Chinese School is a non-profit, private ethnic language school. The School currently utilizes the teaching facilities at The William Fremd High School, Palatine, Illinois. The school also occasionally holds programs at other facilities to fulfill its educational requirements.

II.Schoo Missions

The major focus of the School is to provide a learning environment for students who are interested in learning Chinese language, culture, history, and geography. The School also participates in events that are part of Chinese community activities in the Chicago area as well as the whole United States.  

III.School Schedule

The school year starts at the end of August and finishes at the beginning of June. The classes are held on every Sunday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM with the exception of five major holidays.

IV.School Governing Body

The governing body of the School is the Board of Directors. The Board consists of nine members elected by the voting members of the School to serve a two-year term. Voting members include the student parents, volunteer faculty members, and enrolled students who are over eighteen years of age.

V. Member Obligation

The functions and activities of the School depend on volunteer work by all members. Parents of the enrolled students are required to assist the School in all phases of its operation including teaching, assisting teachers, preparing class materials, and participating in membership meetings and administrative tasks of the School.  

VI. Admission Requirement

Children who are at least four years old before September 1st may apply for admission to attend the School.   

There are approximately 160 to 180 students attending classes from preschool to 10th grade.  

VII. Teaching Material

The textbooks used by the School consist of 12 volumes that systematically build up the studentsˇ¦ Chinese vocabulary. Supplementary teaching materials are obtained through sources such as the US Chinese School Association and the Midwest Chinese School Association.  

VIII. Program Recognized by IL State Board of Education

The advance classes (7th grade and higher) are a part of the program that receives recognition from the Illinois State Board of Education. Teachers of the program have at least a baccalaureate degree and at least twenty semester hours of credit taught in Chinese. Students who participate in the program that contains 120 hours of instruction can request one foreign language credit to be transferred to their regular high schools after satisfying the Schoolˇ¦s requirements for credit transfer.  

IX. Program Requirements for Chinese Language Credit

Students must be currently enrolled at Chicago Northwest Suburban Chinese School and file the application for the program during the Chinese School ˇ¦s Fall Registration Period.

The selection of fourth period curriculum must be related to the Chinese culture subjects. The sport classes unrelated to Chinese culture are not considered acceptable parts of the program.  

Students must pass the Schoolˇ¦s Language Credit Examination in order to have the Chinese language credit transferred to their regular high schools.  

The Chinese Language Credit transfer will not be given to students who have not finished their freshman year at their regular high schools.  

Currently, school districts 125, 211, 213, 214 and 220 have awarded high school credit for the study of Chinese language in Chicago Northwest Suburban Chinese School .  We are making requests to other local school districts for approval of accepting the Chinese language credit transfer from our school.
